Heavy Equipment Operator Commercial Construction
Job Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment on commercial job sites. This role supports site development, utility installation, structural foundations, paving, and other civil or vertical construction activities while maintaining strict adherence to safety, quality, and productivity standards.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
Operate excavators, dozers, skid steers, loaders, compactors
Perform precision grading, trenching, backfilling, and material handlingExecute fine grading to elevations per site plans and laser/GPS controls
Assist with concrete prep, paving subgrade prep, and drainage installation
Load trucks and manage stockpiles efficiently
Site Work & Coordination
Read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and site plans
Coordinate with foreman, survey crews, and utility installers
Verify elevations, slopes, and compaction requirements
Maintain production rates consistent with project schedule
Safety & Compliance
Conduct daily pre-operation equipment inspections (fluid levels, tracks, safety systems)
Follow OSHA standards and company safety policies
Maintain safe operating distances around personnel and structures
Participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings
Equipment Maintenance
Perform minor maintenance and lubrication
Identify mechanical issues and report immediately
Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of assigned equipment
Meet daily production targets
Maintain safe equipment operation with zero preventable incidents
Demonstrate accuracy in grading and excavation
Maintain dependable attendance and punctuality
Required Qualifications
3+ years commercial construction equipment operation experience
Demonstrated proficiency operating multiple types of heavy equipment
Ability to read grade stakes and interpret site plans
Strong understanding of jobsite safety protocols
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
NCCCO certification (if applicable)
Experience with GPS machine control systems (Topcon, Trimble, etc.)
CDL (Commercial Driver’s License)
Experience in commercial civil, drainage, or large-scale site development
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment
Ability to climb into and out of equipment repeatedly
Work outdoors in heat, cold, humidity, and varying site conditions
Lift up to 50 lbs when performing manual tasks
Reporting Structure
Reports To: Superintendent / Project Manager / Foreman

Active commercial construction sites with exposure to noise, dust, heavy equipment traffic, and changing weather conditions in a fast-paced production-driven environment.
